Prunella vulgaris
This perennial has leaves which are oval and stalked, and are paired on the stem. It flowers in June to September when it produces distinctive dense spikes of blue/violet flowers on short erect stems 15 to 30cm tall.
The flower head almost looks like a fir cone with its dense dark brown bracts underneath the hooded flowers. It flourishes in grassy lawns, woodland clearings and other grasslands and as the name suggests it has a traditional use as it contains oils used for treating sore throats.
