Foxglove
Digitalis purpurea
This biennial or perennial has tall upright un-branched stems and the plant can be 1 to 2 metres in height. Its hairy oval shaped leaves have a slightly wrinkled texture and spiral around the stem.
It flowers in June - September and produces long spires of slender flared tubular purple flowers which are spotted at the base of the funnel, bees can often be seen disappearing entirely into the flower to collect their pollen.
After flowering, the stems bear fruit capsules which ripen from green to black and expel large numbers of seeds. It grows in woodland clearings, along road verges, hedgerows and banks preferring acid soil. This plant is poisonous so care should be taken to wash hands thoroughly after handling.
