Cowslip

Cowslip

Primula veris

This perennial produces a leafy tuft and upright, leafless stalks to the flower heads which reach 10 to 30mm tall. Its oblong wrinkled leaves (similar in texture to that of the Primrose) form a rosette around the base of the plant.

It produces lovely apricot scented flowers in April and May, and they form a stalked (usually one sided) cluster of up to 30 yellow nodding tube shaped flowers each with 5 petals and with strong orange streaks inside.

When the flowers have died off an egg shaped seed capsule is left and it opens to release many small angular seeds. Cowslips are found in meadows and dry grassy places, also on embankments, usually on chalky soil. It generally prefers a sunny open position.
