Sycamore

Sycamore

Acer pseudoplatanus

The Sycamore is a fast growing deciduous species and the most common Maple in Europe . Its rapid establishment enables it to provide much needed shelter relatively quickly as well as assisting other less hardy species to become established. It is the largest member of the maple family in Europe.

In spring, the small pale green flowers hang in clusters and they are a vital source of pollen and nectar for bees. The seeds are winged and are often referred to as "helicopters". When ripe, they spin away from the tree and fall to the ground in the autumn wind.

Timber from the sycamore is widely used for furniture making and joinery and is excellent for flooring.
