Hornbeam
Carpinus betulus
Native
A deciduous tree which, if clipped, forms an excellent dense hedge. Its oval leaves are dark green above and paler underneath turning yellow in autumn, they have prominent veins and are toothed. It has pendulous catkins appearing in early spring.
Male catkins are yellow-brown and are long; the female catkins are green and shorter. Its fruit is winged and hangs in clusters ripening from green to yellow-brown.
Some brown leaves will be retained in autumn and it provides a very good source of food for wildlife.
