The Common (or European) Ash is found in the wild in damp woodland, near riverbanks and in mixed broadleaved woodland. It can be found all through the British Isles (except North Scotland) and throughout Europe. This deciduous tree is easily distinguishable from other species of Ash as it has black buds (most other species buds are brown).
The leaves can grow up to 30cm long can be last to open in spring (but one of the first to fall in autumn).This tree can be male one year and female the next (and vice versa), the female having flowers that develop into fruits known as keys.
Ash has been used in the manufacture of bows, snooker cues, boat paddles and oars, cricket stumps and walking sticks. Has a fragrant smell when burnt.

Ash likes
This hardy tree can cope with most soil types (except really acid soils) but on the whole prefers the soil to be a little moist and well drained.
Ash dislikes
A lot of shade.

Can grow up to 40m (130ft).
